opening sequence full script

Sound of school bell.

A camera pan of 5 kids sitting at their desks looking extremely bored, showing their individual characters through various actions. Basketball player playing with his basketball, Goth listening to loud music, class clown lazing around bothering others and geek reading a book and gets a paper cut

MARIA
Lightly shaking her hand due to paper cut sting
Ouch

Camera carries on panning until BIANCA the schools most popular and self obsessed girl is in the frame. She looks frustrated and wriggles until she leaves her seat.
Various shots of her leaving classroom and going to the toilet. She gets to the toilet heads straight to the sink and runs her fingers through her hair. She then looks in the mirror and sees a black figure of a person dressed in black behind her. She looks back and sees none their. She slams all of the cubicle doors to reassure her that none is there she goes back to the mirror. Washes her face.

Inside the detention room.

MARCUS
Where is BIANCA she’s been in those toilets fro how long!

BOB
You know girls always in that silly mirror

MARCUS
Putting his ball down on the table
I think someone should go check on her

BOB
Am not going anywhere and my girl over there (indicating MARIA)
Is too busy reading that rubbish. Guess that leaves you big guy (pointing at the Goth-JASON)

Jason looks around to make sure their talking to him and waits a while before leaving his seat. He leaves tucking his chair in a very aggressive manner.

Outside classroom, in the corridors.

JASON
(Under his breath)
Stupid idiots who do they think they are, they can’t tell me what to do, imbeciles

Jason carries on walking kicking a ball of paper around

Inside the toilets

BIANCA is washing her face and looks up as she does so she begins to cough and beings to throw up blood whilst seeing figure in the mirror.
BIANCA
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhg

She begins to stager out of the bathroom trying to hold on to walls leaving blood marks behind her.

Inside the detention room

BOB is looking at Marcus in a weird way as if he has something to say

BOB
So when’s the big game

MARCUS
January

BOB
Be sure not to break a leg or something or bore yourself to death in this shithole

Inside the corridors

BIANCA is still trying to get to the class room having trouble breathing. We see figure behind her watching

Inside the detention room

BOB carries on disturbing others

BOB
What you reading their?

MARIA looks at him and quickly turns her attention back to her book

BOB
Ok then not talking are you that’s fine but when you -

BIANCA slams the door open and burst into the room looking in very bad shape whilst Maria screams

MARRIA
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!

BIANCA
Help me please! Its him he did it, I saw him –
He did this-

BIANCA collapses unto he ground the rest of them run to her limp lifeless body scared and filled with terror

MARCUS
Oh shit someone get help do something

MARIA
What happened!?

MARCUS
How the hell should I know just do something!

BOB runs out of the classroom to find help and realises that no one is their. The corridors are dark and completely empty. MARIA and MARCUS shout out for help and also leave the room.

MARCUS
(In panic)
Where is everybody

Bob looks at them shaking his head in disbelief

BOB
There all gone there’s no one here.

MARCUS
Well don’t just stand their, you too tries open the doors.

Marcus rushes to the doors and desperately trying to open them with no success he shouts

MARCUS
Well come on then!

Maria and bob run to the doors and help him to try and open them

MARIA
There are 3 other doors on this building we could try

MARCUS
Ok lets bob lets go try those ones. You stay with her

Marcus and bob run across to the other side of the building and try their hardest to get the doors open.

BOB
This is stupid let’s just break these windows

Marcus runs back to the corridor where he left his basket ball and back to the door where bob is standing. He begins to aim and throws the ball with all his strength at the window. A crack appears

BOB
Oh yes!

Marcuse beings to aim again however this time the shutters of the window begin to come down from the outside of the doors making it impossible to leave

MARCUS
Oh shit, if these carry on were never leaving, run to the other ones quick

Bob and Marcus run to their other possible escapes and see that the doors are not only locked but have the shutters down from the inside. Same for all the windows.

BOB
Dam! What is this how the hell are we leaving this place.(shaky voice) I cant die in this pace I swear down, there is something fucking fishy going on her I am telling you now I cant die in this stupid-

MARCUS
Shut up. I don’t care do what you want but shut up I don’t know about you but am getting out of this place.

Inside the classroom.

Maria is sitting beside BIANCA’S body looking traumatized with tears streaming down her face. The boys walk in

MARIA
So

MARCUS
I will find a way

BOB
SO! WE ARE STUCK! We are not coming out and just like her we are going to die her in SCHOOL!

MARIA
What about the other doors-

BOB
Well they are locked too! Shutters and all. But I guess you smarty pants did not think that through did you!

MARCUS
I though I told you to shut up

The boys begin to argue and take their frustrations out on each other

BOB
And so what! DO you think you can tell me what to do boss me around I don’t think so you shut the fuck up and-

MARIA (in her frustration also shouts)
Be quiet both of you! Look at you. We are stuck I a room with a body and you’re arguing over this crap.

Marcus walks over to Bianca. He picks up her hand and shakes his head releasing a deep sight and dropping her hand back down.

MARCUS
She’s dead

MARIA screams with her hands over her mouth and goes to her seat. Bob stops speaking and just looks at the other two’s reaction, and then putting his head down.

Marcus walks around the room. The room is completely silent until Marcus bangs a desk

MARCUS
Right I want all you too to search this room from head to toe for something to help us get out of here. I will try doing the same or else it looks like were stuck in here.

They all rummage the classroom for some sort of key or helpful object. However everything is empty. They carry on Maria finds a big book (a diary).
She looks around at the two still looking around the room

MARIA
I found something
BOB
What? a book keep your reading to yourself we are trying to get out
MARCUS snatches the book and opens it reading the first page as he reads his faces changes and becomes all shambled.

MARIA
What’s wrong! What is it?

BOB
What’s in the book!

MARCUS
It’s written

MARIA
WHAT IS

MARCUS
Everything which has happened Bianca, us its been written.

In disbelieve Maria and bob take the book and read on.

BOB
Wow.
And he moves away from the book.

MARIA
Am turning the page

BOB
Are you sure you want to do that

Marcus looks and nods at her
MARIA reads the book in her head leaving the other two in suspense. She looks at them

MARIA
Were all going to die? She picks up the book again and reads the end they should do what they need to stay alive however I implore them to do the opposite

BOB
Fuck what does that even mean. Am not fuking dying here? What does that mean? Tell me! He shouts at Maria

MARIA
HEAD OWN
I don’t know.

BOB
But you know everything else don’t you!

MARIA
The book talks about our deaths, however they all occur outside this room.

BOB
So

MARCUS
So to try stay alive we have to remain in this room.
Well that wont be too hard were all here

They all look at each other and shout Jason’s name together

In another classroom upstairs

Jason is laying on the floor the camera moves up from his legs upwards, we think he is dead but he is sleeping with headphones on. He wakes up and looks around to see where he is he then gets up and opens the door, as he does this he sees the figure again.

Inside the detention room

BOB
I knew it I bet you this is all him. You saw his face I asked him to check on Bianca you saw I know you lot saw it him I can feel it, who knows where the fucker is now

Inside other class room upstairs

Jason is laying on the ground again the camera shows his legs upwards however this time he his slightly shaking laying in a pool of his own blood.
With his headphones on.

Inside the detention room.

Hours have gone by and Maria is sleeping bob is singing a song repeatedly and Marcus in sitting in front of the door quietly rocking himself trying to keep his eyes of Bianca’s body. He gets a flash back of him opening his locket and a note falling out reading ‘please report to room 362 for detention today at 3 o’clock’
Camera zooms into him reading and fades back to him detention room. As he rocks himself he looks outside the classroom door and begins to make a shiny metal like objects. Looks like a key. He looks around the room and sees Maria sleeping and bob still singing facing a wall starting to dose of. He slowly stands up and opens the door still looking behind him. Marcus is now outside. The sound of the door closing causes bob to turn around and see.

BOB
YOU LITTLE PRIK!

Bob runs and locks the door
Marcus runs back and begs him to open the door
A shadow runs behind him which they cannot see
Marcus open the door
Bob
So that’s your plan then we stay here together in the room together not outside together hmm
Marcus
Bob open this door now
Bob
No
Marcus
Bob open this fucking door n-
Marcus is hit on the head with a hammer his blood splatters on the door. Bob lets go of the handle and begins to shake and terror

prelim task

Preliminary Brief: Film and edit a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character. A couple of lines of dialogue must then exchange between characters & match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule should be demonstrated.

Main Task: The titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes (all video and audio material must be original, produced by candidates, with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source

Looking back on my prelim task I feel that there are m things which I have learnt many things from it which have helped me in m recent work. Our prelim task consisted of making a 30 second mini film of two people meeting up and having a conversation. I this we had many things to remember like the 180 degree rule and reaction shots. This was all very new to me. This gave me practice, and a small insight of the amount of planning involved in making a film. Over all I would say that, that task went rather well as I found the editing process of this very manageable. However my partner and I made the mistake of not installing the sound equipment, giving us no sound in our sequence. This was my biggest lesson learnt from that task. Although it is very obvious equipment check is extremely important. That mistake helped me to know how to deal with the production of my main task. I constantly checked the camera’s spirit level, made sure angles looked go d and that everything supposed to be in a frame was in the frame. This was done due to a previous mistake. I also learnt no to be afraid to make changes if something does not look right. For example in our main task we originally wanted a wide shot of the kids in the classroom, and a shot of a white board saying ‘silence when in ‘detention’. However when we reviewed our rushes, we saw that those shots did not work and needed to be taken out. As well as in postproduction we also made changes during the production. We originally wanted the geek to have a nose bleed during the pan, to be a bit symbolic of her being the reason for these deaths and having their blood on their hands. We went with that idea for ages but however on production we decided that it would make more sense if Bianca, had a nose bleed, this would give her an even better reason to leave the classroom.

The prelim brief and task was similar to the main one, but there differences still remain. I found that with the prelim task we had less planning to do as we were limited to a 30 second sequence. This made everything short and very easy to remember the time we took to shoot was very short as well, this put a small amount of pressure on us but it was enough. Regarding the story, I feel that we were more restricted. This is because it was to be about two people meeting and having a conversation. These people had to be shown walking to their meeting places individually before being seen together. In the main task there was much more discussions and more ideas involved. This was hard because for me it was with people had never worked with before, so we had so many different ideas to choose from. However we were still kind of restricted because our stories had to be based on a fairy tale or show a few themes from the selected fairy tale. The planning was very intense compared to the planning done for the prelim task, but because we had done this before I was prepared.

Main task

Organising ourselves was much harder as we had much more to do compared to our prelim task. We organised our self through lots of planning and meeting up together to get our ideas and concepts together, so they would be strong.
We arranged this by shooting schedules and storyboarding, this helped us not to waste time as everyone knew what they were doing, this prevented waste of time and needless complications. Regarding actor and character
We also allocated roles to each member in our group in advanced and carried out two rehearsals and therefore made running the shoot a lot easier. Everyone knew the role they had to play and this made it a lot more efficient. We used this method during filming of our film opening sequence and this really helped as it took a lot shorter to shoot than it could have. This is something which cannot be said d for our prelim task; although it was easier to carry out we had a lot more complications, probably because we were not as prepared. This is another ways that the prelim task has helped me learn and improve.
Prelim task:

The planning here was less stressful, as it was as mentioned before a very short sequence which we were producing.
Story boards were easy and I think we followed it pretty much to the T. everything was like in the story board. This is a difference to the process in our main task as during production we changed and added a few things. We had a few problems with our cast but we overcame that quiet easily. Because we didn’t have any rehearsals before shooting with our characters the directing was a bit harder than in our main task, however the script did not really involve too much so it was not too hard for our cast to understand. A big mistake we made in this was not setting up the sound equipment properly; the film came out good however we unfortunately lost our sound.
From making our prelim task to our main task I have learnt:
*the importance of planning as everything plays a big role in postproduction as well as production.
In our prelim task we did not add final changes to the original script which was given to our cast so sometimes we had to stop to remind cast of their lines. In this there were two people as cast. We were able to get one persons number but not the other, so when it was our time to film that person did not show up and we were not able to contact her so we had to get a replacement.
* I have learned from my mistakes, and made sure equipment was set up proper by having our director do at least 2 sound test before we started filming.
In the prelim task my partner received no sound in our sequence, as the sound equipment was not installed properly. Another problem we faced was lack of time as we had to our filming on the next day as we spent too much time filming for one group. So time was another thing which I learnt to control in order to get everything done. In our prelim task another problem we faced was people walking in our shots and making too much noise. So for my main task this was an issue that we prepared for during planning. We looked at the school time table and decided to film during lesson and take 10 minute breaks between classroom changes to make sure no one would get into our shots.
* have learned more variety in my shots. In my prelim task everything was very basic as we mostly focused on reaction shots. In our main task however we had to include many more shots for the film to have a certain effect on our audience.

Overall I have mainly learnt the importance of planning. I now know that everything is there for a reason. A story board being very important to the planning process as it allows you to know your shots and is basically your film on paper. A shooting schedule helps you plan out your shooting times helping you to be organised, as well as your cast. This helped us a lot as we had a lot of people involved in our sequence. Continuity sheets area also helpful but I think, most helpful when making a long sequence. It helped use know weather a take was good or bad but regarding costume our cast constantly stayed in the same clothes so that was not really a problem to fill out. All this planning helped us to make everything the way we intended it to be.

All this planning helped us to make everything the way we intended it to be.

Evaluation question number 6

Shooting:
During ring production had to use different equipment to keep things safe and protected as well as for the best outcome of our film.
We had to use a cannon xh a1HD camera, to shoot our footage. This was the thing which i was in charge of during production. I had used it before it was quiet easy to manage. We attached on a tripod, which allowed me to get still and steady shots, and produce clean and steady angles and tilts. During filming we used two microphones. The cameras external mic and the sound equipment which consisted of a boom pole to hold the equipment high or low. The equipment had a microphone protected in a windshield system. This was to protect the microphone as it is very sensitive and would damage if it ever fell. The sound equipment also had a hairy harry to protect the windshield equipment, as well as reduce the amount of sound picked up. Because the microphone is so sensitive it can pick a lot of sound as well as unwanted sounds, for example rain drops or wind. We did not have any dialogue in our sequence but we still used the equipment just in case we change our minds and decided to have diagetic on screen sound. We also did this because of a past mistake in my prelim task.
Editing was the next step:
When we got on to this the first thing we done was digitize and then assemble our shots. We then perfected our assemble edits by cutting the shots down and only having what we need on screen. This was done through the basic tools on the software: razor tool this took a lot of time as we had to discuss what to keep and we sometimes changed our minds about our original ideas. We then started adding our affects and planning where they would go and how effective it would be for the film. We played around a bit and found that we should keep it simple by not having too many affects; due to this we decided to only have subtle fades in the beginning and at the end of the sequence. The fades worked well in the begging because the first thing seen is a flickering light, so it looks as though we are turning on the light and introducing the characters.
Tittles: out titles were also made on this software. We tried to go for something which would relate to the genre so we went for red. The titles looked to simple so we decided to make them glow slightly, and more white than red, as the red made the film look more than it actually is it would suit a more horror film whereas our film is a thriller/ slasher flick.
Including the sound was the most challenging as we some troubles importing our music file, in the end we got there feedback we received was mixed, our teacher said that our fist choice very heavy and did too much when there was nothing going on so we changed it and got better comments.
I leaned that technology is a very important part too and that you can fix many things with editing and make things look better through effects. The editing has broadened my understanding and i have gained more confidence in this process, so am more comfortable at editing.
Overall i have learnt: To use zooms on the camera effectively to create different shots, i also learnt the importance of a tripod. Without this our shots would not be steady and we would not be able to create different one like tilts and crabs a wells as pans teaching me more shot types and has advanced my camera skills. I am also much more comfortable handling the equipment as before when i found out i was handling the camera i was a little bit weary and scared that everything depended don me. Thanks to preparations and several set up’s before the real production i was ready and knew what to do. And most importantly i have also learnt that there is so much scope for creativity despite our low budget and limited equipment. I learnt that once you’ve understood all the technology it is so easy to use and you can create so many different effects and that different ideas can make something great and different.

Evaluation question number 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our target audience with many tools, such as sound lighting and mis en scene. During postproduction I looked and listed all horror films which appealed to me personally, and tried to note down all the things that made me like it so much. As I found the main reason for my interest in the films where a good story line interesting and interesting characters. I also looked at films which were a great success in the film industry and also tried to make note of what made them so successful. Films such hostel, saw and final destinations were successful mostly with their target audiences because they knew exactly what their target audience wanted to see and what they expected in the beginning. I found someone dying or suffering in the beginning is a key convention which we just had o follow, which is present in a good 90% of horror /thriller films.

We then took all these notes into consideration and our hardest to add them into our film for it to appeal to our target audience too.
First of story line: we came up with at least 5 ideas before we came to the conclusion of having detention as our final story. Our first ideas were good however not good enough which was shown in our feedback. We came up with our final idea by trying to include as many interesting films as possible. We also changed and put a lot of thought into our characters, especially focussing on their weaknesses and strength so their way of death would be effective but most importantly made sense.
By doing this we received a lot of positive feedback even doe 10 percent of that feedback was mostly telling us things we should improve on.
When we got to post production this allowed us to know exactly how our characters were going to look act, and the way which rooms would look. (Mis en scene)
This would have attracted out audience, because the mood is very aerie from the beginning with the flickering light and everyone minding their own business, in this damp, dark room. The camera work also played a big part in attracting our audience. As I saw in many films that simple camera tricks or techniques created a mood or want for more. As I was in charge of the camera I tried to watch as many film openings as possible and see how they moved to their establishing shots. I viewed many such as close ups which gradually zoom out, pans, still shots and many more. Over all I saw many but I saw a technique which I found very effective. It was the camera panning down from a high angle and moving to the focus of the scene.
We interpreted this n our own way by having a black screen which faded into a flickering light on the ceiling(high angle) and then gradually moving down, however we didn’t do a straight cut to the kids in the classroom, from our panned down we panned across the classroom in the same shot. I had done this in a very slow manner to build the anticipation to see what is on the screen. I think this would attract our target audience as the pans could cause either eagerness or fear of what is to come on screen. Overall I was very proud of the first shot of the film.
In our film we had no speech, or onscreen sound. We thought the film would be effective and would look and sound better with a soundtrack. The music we used is very slow and rises at certain moments but very rarely, this was done to keep the beginning subtle and not too over the top. This was to keep big anticipation and heavy music to the end where it is more relevant. This was also a way in which I think we attracted ad addressed our audience by keeping them interested in the film. We took things from other films, such as surprises endings which would attract our audience as surprise endings are present in a lot of the films they would have probably already have watched. We also included films of vicious never ending circles, as the deaths only actually end when everyone is dead, no matter how much the victims try. However this was slightly twisted as the films we saw with never ending circles usually end with something sudden like someone popping out of nowhere. However in our film the geek hands the dark figure a book, and we are unaware whether the rest of the pages are filled with other victims or just blank. This causes suspicion which would again attract our audience if we wanted to make a part two of our film.

In the beginning of our film, we have credits which are red are slightly glowing. We originally wanted to have some kind of sharp writing which resembled scratches. Although this was not achieved we still had a similar look simply by using capital letters, in red to obviously symbolise death and blood. This would attract our audience in the beginning, by already knowing what to expect. Thanks to the colour of the letters and all of the things which are associated with that colour. Overall I think we done well while doing this but we could have improved on the lighting in the last few shots. As we indented to have a kind of dark atmosphere however it was a little too dark.

Evaluation question number 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our horror/thriller also known as slasher flick was primarily aimed at teenagers from the ages of 14 to 19.on a technical level We chose this audience because our film contained many themes and conventions that were present in the films we researched and those films were aimed the same age group. These themes varied from, death, love deception, fear, enemies, broken friendships and many other similar themes which we tried to include in our opening sequence. This was also decided because my group and belong to this age group so we thought it would be much easier to relate and know what our audience would be wanting at every moment of the film. Our target audience could be described as fun young and outgoing that get a thrill out of horror films. As mentioned before many of he films we researched were thriller/horror films which contained very similar themes to our film. Films such as
Final destination which was a very big inspiration, due to its sales and popularity. Many of our ideas originated from this film as
It is also about a group of teenagers who die in
A series of events, triggered by past actions.

An example of this would be in the 3 film when two very self obsessed girls die in scorching hot locked tanning beds. Other films such as I know what you did last summer which is the story of a young girl who is followed around due to her past actions. In this film the attacker is prepared to kill anyone in his way in order to get to her. This film would be enjoyed by our target audience once again due to the themes but mostly due to the one of never ending, a very vicious cycle which seems to never end even in the last film. They would also be attracted by the surprise endings which act as the core reason why the audience come back for more. We tried to include a surprise ending in our film as well by making the so called vulnerable geek to be the reason for the tragedies in the film.
Other films which would attract our target audience would be films like prom night, saw, and mirrors because they all present similar themes to our film.
Although we did have a main primary target audience, we are also aware of the group of people which our film may attract. Our secondary target audience would be more mature people older people around the ages of 20 to 30. I personally thought of this from experience as many of my older family members very much enjoy watching horror films. Another audience that the film may attract may be very young which is something which is not very much intended. From my research and personal experience I have seen that film certificates are pretty much ignored and that more and more young children from 8years and above and playing and watching certificate 18 games as well as films.

Profile of target audience:

Age: around the ages of 14 to 19 mostly in education for our film to have a realistic impact on their everyday lives, as the film also is set in a school.
They are very likely to have a laid back lifestyle, as mentioned they are in education so probably live at home and not working and enjoy partying a kind of typical teenager I suppose.

Gender: there is no specific gender which our film is aimed at, it’s aimed to all mostly because of all the different characters involved in films boys and girls. There are also different ethnicities and backgrounds too.

Evaluation question number 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A film distributor is an independent company, a subsidiary company or occasionally an individual, which acts as the final agent between a film production company, and a film exhibitor, to the end of securing placement of the producer's film on the exhibitor's screen. In the film business, the term "distribution" refers to the marketing and circulation of movies in theaters, and for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television etc).
Film distribution is basically marketing the producer’s film. This means the release of the film in cinemas, and the distribution of the films for home viewing on DVD, TV etc. Film distribution requires the materials and rights of the producer and the cooperation of the exhibitor to promote and show the film in the best way possible. In this sector, distribution can be divided into three stages - licensing, marketing and logistics. After the producers have come up with an idea and concept the film goes through several screenings before being complete:
*test screening
*informal test screening
*focus group screenings
*formal test screening
*private preview screenings.

Film distribution can be a costly but vital aspect of the film industry. It’s the business of launching and sustaining films in the market place. It’s how films become popular and find their place in the world. The distributor plays a really important role in the film industry. It offers exposure for films and gains larger audiences to improve how successful it is. Once the film is delivered, the distributor determines the release strategy and release date. The distributor then presents the film to exhibitors and makes agreements to have the film shown in cinemas.
There are many ways to get a low budget film noticed this is done through the vast amount of film distribution sites and associations dedicated simply to distributing low budget films.
FDA is a UK film distribution association, they call themselves the voice for the uk as they focus mostly on British films, however they found in a lot of mainstream cinemas so although kind of up our street because its British it still is would not be too likely that they would distribute our film.
Another media institution that would consider distributing our film would be a distributor like dogwoof. A UK film distributor association and known for supporting many independent films.
They shortly after set up dogwoof indie set up to advertise fresh and new talent around from the growing amount of independent filmmakers in the industry. The most relevant to our film genre would be crypt club. www.cryptclubproductions.blogspot.com .CRYPT CLUB is an independent production and distribution company specialising in thrillers, horror and dark fantasy films. Some film festivals screen as well as give advice to filmmakers. These festivals would be another great way of distributing and promoting our film it’s cheap and we can get a guaranteed audience. In the US film festivals are extremely popular due to the vast amount of independent film makers over there. He Sundance Film Festival is a film festival that takes place annually in the state of Utah, in the United States. It is the largest independent cinema festival in the U.S. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, as well as the Sundance Resort, the festival is the premier showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. Raindance is a more UK based festival which usually takes place in central London it is the UK's largest independent film festival established in 1992 by Elliot Grove to extend the normal film school activities of Raindance and to celebrate and support independent filmmaking.
There are other alternatives to distribute our film. This is simply through the internet. This method has become very popular over the year and has made many of today’s famous artists what they are today. This method is so popular because it cheaper and just so easy to carry out. Sites such as YouTube only require a membership to upload films and videos. This way is also effective as you can get comments from your actually audience as well as secondary audience and because its not exactly released you can take your film and make changes to it based on the feedback./comments
It’s cheap and can spread simply through word of mouth. Another way to market films is underground film who concentrates on independent film distribution through the internet. They intend to “create a digital film library with the widest breadth of content possible and broaden exposure by making hard-to-find works available through Internet distribution.

Evaluation question number 2

How does the opening sequence represent particular social groups and settings?

Our opening focuses on the different social groups found in most schools, the geeks the Goths, the popular kids, the jocks and the class clowns aka jokers. In some high school comedies/dramas and romances this concept can be watered down to prevent discrimination, however it mostly present in Bratz the Movie. 2007 directed by Sean McNamara. In this film the beginning of the year starts of with kids being put into certain social group which is where we got most of our characters attitudes and reactions from.

Each character is focused on individually throughout the film which is why Bianca can only be considered the main character because she is the first focused on in the film.
In our film Bianca is made to represents a very vain girl, at the height of the school food chain. A self obsessed girl who is not exactly very smart. She could come across s rude, arrogant, and quiet intimidating depending on were you stand. She represents a classic girly girl, who is most likely to wear pink or white, those kind of soft colours.
The girl originally cast for her role was chosen from very few because of her look. She was a white British female with very nice blond hair. The director and I though that with hair and costume she would look the part and become the perfect representation of that kind of character. This was difficult for her as she herself was nothing like her character at all and hated most things her character was supposed to practically love. Due to this we found she felt extremely uncomfortable playing this character and this showed in our photo story board and during our rehearsals. This made us decide to get someone else to replace her. This was a positive transition as our new actor got more into character and therefore looked more natural.

We put Bianca at the back of the class room as further away from the others reading a magazine, to represent a character that does not interact with those who are not of her kind. The magazine also represents her giggly girly kind of attitude. There wasn’t much lighting change for the characters as we only saw them briefly.
All these elements of mis en scene were done for her to look like a certain snobby girl who cares for nothing but herself. We did this by having her bag on the table at all times, her reading a magazine, and playing with her hair.
Her character was made up from characters like Regina George from mean girls and other popular girls in films such as not another teen movie.

My group and I made sure that every character was represented in a very stereotypical manner and also had a stereotypical look and attitude to them to make them very clear, with out unnecessary dialogue or interaction with other characters.
For the Goth we tried to get a very dark feel to him. He wore very dark clothing all black. This is because Goths and emos are very much known for their dark clothing and perception of life. His hair and make up was also very dark, he wore dark lipstick and black nail polish as well as eyeliner.
As for props he was listening to music on very big head phones, which is also very commonly seen in films as well as reality. We directed him to feel angry for some reason of his preference, and to constantly give us an angry facial expression.
He would be described as most likely a white male, constantly moody
He probably:
*would have had a past experience making him so angry
*enjoy rock sty type of music
*not have many friends as hardly anyone is likely to understand him

Although slightly irrelevant we made up his character by looking at other films where a character possessed a certain loneliness factor. For example films such as elephant, the boys were isolated causing them to do such a thing. They had an attitude that seemed as if they could not care less and carried burden of anger with them everywhere they went. This is very similar to our Goth character. Films such as St. Trinians, where the Goths in the boarding school are looked down upon and seen as ‘freaks’.
His appearance was not very hard to achieve as we went for a very stereotypical look with all our characters so we made him look as crazy and dark as possible through the use of very heavy dark make up which they are known for wearing. This was so that a lot about him came across on screen even without dialogue as there was no dialogue present.

For the basket ball player I personally found his character very easy to put together however I still feel as if it could have come across better than it did on screen.
We made our actor wear a hoodie, however not looking intimidating we made look busy playing with his basketball to keep a certain balance between bad boy and high school jock. We directed hi to constantly look at nothing but the ball moving around on the table to show his interest in basketball. We originally anted him to spin the ball on his finger during the pans, but it was not possible as the ball fell and so during rehearsals I thought that it would cause too much disruption on the actual filming day.
Our basketball jock was a black male, very active and sporty, preserved also as a bit of a bad boy, selfish and much focused on basketball. This character was made up from bits and pieces of other films like
Chad from high school musical but much more serious and less happy. Another character which he represents or is similar to would be 50 cent in destruct before i self, a young basketball player reaching for a basketball dream.

We wanted our class clown to be as annoying as can be. We directed him to constantly poke the Goth which is why we made them sit next to each other. His image was very casual and laid back he ware jeans and a jacket , we originally wanted him to wear a leather jacket but thought it would add a bit of seriousness to his character which is not what we indented. We made him poke the Goth with the pencil he was supposed to use to write his lines with to show his care free attitude to what I expected of him. This character was a white male describe a very funny, annoying, and unable to follow instructions straightaway.

Now for the geek, her character was very simple to portray. As soon as we put glasses on her she looked the part. However we wanted a more stereotypical kind of look so we plated her hair sand have her wear a very smart shirt.
We directed her to be the only one in the class actually doing what she was supposed to do, revising and writing her lines. In this she looks at nothing but the paper to once again emphasise her passion for education.
She is sat at the front of the class, because it’s seen as a very geeky thing to do. Sitting at the front is disliked by many teenagers in films as well as in reality.
She would be described as:
*smart
*conserved
*very focused
*teachers pet
*inferior to the rest in the classroom
These are the qualities which makes the end of the film so shocking.

Setting:
once gain our setting (school) was done to relate to the characters involved in our story like their age and occupations. This was also to give our story a slight twist.

Evaluation question number 1

In what ways does your media product USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE forms and conventions of real media products?

Our film uses many of the typical themes and conventions present in horror/ thriller films we researched. The most common them being death, the idea of being powerless and having no control over something or someone out to get you.
Our film had a typical teen thriller story line. Based in a school, about people in school. This was done so that it would appeal to our audience and fit it with its genre.
Our story’s basic storyline is about the survival of 5 students in a classroom for detention, who die one by one unaware of the reason for it. By doing this we very much followed the forms and conventions of already made products as
This story line is very common in the thrillers I researched such as Final Destination 1 2 and 3.

Each of the film presents a group young people, dying in some sort of planned order. This film also has the same concept of people being powerless trying to surviving however near the end begin to understand what is going on. Other films with a similar story line are Prom Night, where a girl with a troubled past with a psycho after her, who killed her parents tries to move on with her life after he is sent to prison and go to prom. However this man is later released and still on the same mission. He therefore kills almost everyone in his path to get to his victim.
These two films were very helpful during planning as it contained a lot of our ideas; this is how we got to make Detention relate to other horror/thriller film opening sequences. Similarities include:

*Showing something happening to someone in the very beginning
*(This can sometimes not happen to the main character)
*Introducing an important character in the beginning.
*Relating our tittles to the atmosphere of our film/genre
*including music which fit the scene.

Typical themes present in most current horror films as well as Detention:

*Death
*Murder
*Vanity
*Jealousy
*Fear

Despite this our opening sequence includes certain aspects which I would consider challenge, other horror/thriller opening sequences. Firstly by making the ‘geek’ a character which is mostly ignored and inferior to everyone else round the mastermind behind everything happening in the school.
On the other and simply setting and filming our sequence in a school is what challenged other films the most. Most of the films I researched based around characters in the same age group as our characters would simply have several scenes in school, but death scenes or action scenes would happen outside. My group and I saw this and so took the idea of a school being a safe and positive environment and turning it around and making it the worst place to be.
This was achieved mostly through mis en scene. The school was empty and the classroom although with people in it seemed cold and gloomy. This is another typical aspect of horror films, the beginning is very rarely presenting something positive e.g.: a positive atmosphere. During planning we had trouble finding a room which would have the look we desired. We wanted an old looking room, not very modern and a bit dark to automatically set the scene, as the classroom shots are the first ones which would be seen by our audience.
The amount of character variety was also a twist, and challenges typical horror/thriller media products. Each of or five characters where extremely different. This was good as we could tell characters apart but also hard during planning, as only two or our characters would probably be present in a current horror film.
Because of this we then decided it would be best if we instead looked at typical high school romances and comedies. This was done because of the amount of different people present in schools. Each character in high school comedies acts in a very stereotypical manner. For example a popular girl would most likely be a cheerleader, be rude to everyone and be rich. During this I found that the stereotypical approach to things was a good idea as it allowed the audience to automatically know who is who very quickly. This was ideal for us as we only had two minutes roughly, and our sequence only showed all our characters for about 25-20 seconds. The way we opened our sequence was also inspired by the films mentioned above. In each they open in an eerie however subtle manner giving the sequence a tension building feel. During my research I have seen that almost all horror/ thriller films have some sort of death which happens in the first 5 minutes. We only had around 2 minutes so we tried too involve this element in. we made our tragedy very subtle by not showing what actually happens to Bianca (the main character). From the feedback we received some people said it was effective however others said this made it seem more like a film trailer rather than the opening sequence. I think this subtleness was achieved through our uses of fades in and fades out, instead of having jump cuts.

Our sequence didn’t not have any dialogue but only a sound track instead. We used typical music and sounds which would be present in other media products. Our sequence included high pitch sounds, which also faded in and out to increase anticipation. These sounds mostly came in when the screen was black with actors names, for audience o feel the need to see what was behind the screen. These sounds were very common in the films I researched, films like final destination 2 starts with a sort of violin sound but moves on to a kind of slow rock tune to set the mood of a teenager kind of world.

From the very beginning where we started our sequence, we developed the idea of our different characters. We tried to show the characters different status and characters by putting their names different positions of the screen. The different positioning of names on screen was also taken from final destination two, however we developed ours by having a black screen with tittles, in final destination the tittles come along the screen.

The character we developed upon the most was the geek, as in a lot of films, geeks are seen as people who focus on their education but can often use their intelligence for and positive things.
In this we didn’t want every single character to be too normal. We made her character much more complex by making her the last one to die as well as the smartest, ending up to be the reason for everything that has happened. Saw 5 is a good example where one of the kidnapped victims’s forced to take on challenges to survive ends up actually working for the reason behind all the distress. This is the same way which we tried to develop our narrative, by making the least capable therefore less expected person to be the cause of the children’s death. This is also how we challenged other media products, by making her evil under her sweet, smart powerless appearance.
Our film challenges normal media products in its opening by not having a lot of establishing shots of the surroundings but instead going straight to introduce the characters one by one. Films we have researched usually start of with a few shots of the surroundings of the scene. We felt this would not be necessary as by showing the classroom we could already tell that the film was set in a school. This would also be shown when Bianca left to go to the toilets. The mis en scene and props also helped us not need to have establishing sots of the school as the paper and pens are all things which would be found in a school. This apposes once again a film like final destination 2 which opens up with establishing shots of the fair ground, and showing clowns’ and the location before we get to meet the characters.

In horror films there is mostly a main target, in I know what you did last summer there is a main target however others around face death because they stand in the killers way. Our film challenges this very common narrative by making everybody a target for a reason. There was no one person more wanted than the other, in our film each person deserved to die.

drama film research

Drama films research:

Drama films have been so successful over the years; they were even some of the first movies ever made. I believe it’s due to their reality aspect as it deals with real life problems and consequences those peoples decisions will cause them later on in life. This is also because some of the most successful films are based on real life, to keep that reality streak going.
I have researched many films and looked at many trailers based upon the drama genre and have found that most drama films are not like typical romances were someone is out of research. This is because as mentioned before this genre is able to adapt many other genres in within in it however still keeping its title of a drama film. Also from simply watching some trailers, I have found out that they make you feel some sort of sincere emotion, and this is simply because people can relate which is something which I will keep in mind when we decide our final story to make it interesting but yet realistic.

Target audiences for these kinds of films I believe mostly depends on the main characters age, again it’s a question of how well the audience can interact because that’s what makes a good film.
For example seven pounds. I would say probably targets an audience of middle class working people, or mostly people around the ages of 16- 40. I would say this age because of the themes and contents of the film and I think having this age group would allow everyone to understand and gain some sort of something from it.
Another example would be the film milk. I would say the target audience would mostly be either homosexuals as well as heterosexuals around the ages of again 17 and over. Simply because the film milk explores the life of Harvey Milk, who was a gay activist and Politian fighting for the righst of gay men. And this audience would be personaly ideal because it would educate hetrosexual people and give them an insight on the lives of others. And it would be ideal for homosexuals because most films don’t realy ever present being gay as something which is ok, and this would be something which they could relate to without having to feel ashamed. Which I belive makes this a very good film.
But over all I think drams can appeal and be targeted to any audience just depending on the contents and story of the protagonist.

Drama films always tend to have some sort of classical if not slow soothing music, in comparisn to the music of a horrror or comedy film. We also tend to be welcomed to the film with the main protagonist or proagonits who are mostly chracters with no power over their surroundings. We are also greeted by their surrounding a lot of the time this is present in persuit of happines and memoires of a gaisha. I chose these two because they both contain the same contents, such as voiceovers. This is because drama films often make use attached to the character and feel some sor of symapthy towards theme. So the voice overs hep use get to know them even bofore the film starts.

Directors such as Gabriele Muccino are famouse for there interesting style of drama. Alrhough he was not always taken seriously films such as persuit of happiness and seven pounds have earned him a plcae on the map.
Gus Green Van Sant, Jr. Is also famous for his interpretation of Harvey Milks life and is responsisble for other success full films.
However on regareds to actors some actors are chosen to strat in drama films because they fit this certain type of genre, the most omon ones are
Will smith
Beyonce
Nicole kidman
Jenifer aniston
Cameron diaz who has also started animation films and many more.

Actors such as will smith are known for there good portrayle of characters in drama films. Others like jada pinkette, and jude law , who also stars in chick flicks and that

thriller films research

Thriller /horror film research:

For all of the films I have watched the horror themes and conventions are shown from the very first frame in the title sequence. They all start of with the use of music in the very beginning of the film and the mis en scene. They are always dark and sombre which automatically sets the mood of the film. I could already tell from the first 3 minutes, the genre, had an idea of what it could be about and sometime the main characters, however this was done very subtly, without giving away too much.
For example final destination 3, a thriller film, started of in a fun fair which is supposed to be a fun enjoyable place, but the director used iron by using a place of fun and comfort to cause so many deaths. The beginning had shots of rides and clowns and devil horns, and a scary thing was what I expected. Because I have watched the film before, this film did live up to my expectations; many of my predicted themes were presented in the film. For example a film would have two people present often, told me their would be themes of love, these two people also always parted quiet a lot which I believed represented, the fact that one of them would part in a horrible way , simply because it’s a horror or thriller film.

The characters are also very often to fit a certain typical role. In many of the horror films I have researched, a girl is seen, running as she is being chased, she is almost always wearing white to represent her innocence, and show clearly to the audience that she is a victim.

Music is used very effectively as it is always reflecting the type of film. In horror its mostly slow music, sometimes classical, this used of irony creates a great effect. As horror compared to thrillers are scarier and deeper. Thrillers; I have found are aimed mostly at teenagers so mostly fast or roc music sometimes, to represents the stereotypical fast lifestyle which teenagers are though to lead.
The tittles are always very sharp (the letters) the colours are mostly dark or bright colours that we associate with anger or fear, for example red. The way they come on screen I have also realised sets the mood. Weather they fade in or, scroll on screen, they way the come in affects our impressions of the film.
