Evaluation question number 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A film distributor is an independent company, a subsidiary company or occasionally an individual, which acts as the final agent between a film production company, and a film exhibitor, to the end of securing placement of the producer's film on the exhibitor's screen. In the film business, the term "distribution" refers to the marketing and circulation of movies in theaters, and for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television etc).
Film distribution is basically marketing the producer’s film. This means the release of the film in cinemas, and the distribution of the films for home viewing on DVD, TV etc. Film distribution requires the materials and rights of the producer and the cooperation of the exhibitor to promote and show the film in the best way possible. In this sector, distribution can be divided into three stages - licensing, marketing and logistics. After the producers have come up with an idea and concept the film goes through several screenings before being complete:
*test screening
*informal test screening
*focus group screenings
*formal test screening
*private preview screenings.

Film distribution can be a costly but vital aspect of the film industry. It’s the business of launching and sustaining films in the market place. It’s how films become popular and find their place in the world. The distributor plays a really important role in the film industry. It offers exposure for films and gains larger audiences to improve how successful it is. Once the film is delivered, the distributor determines the release strategy and release date. The distributor then presents the film to exhibitors and makes agreements to have the film shown in cinemas.
There are many ways to get a low budget film noticed this is done through the vast amount of film distribution sites and associations dedicated simply to distributing low budget films.
FDA is a UK film distribution association, they call themselves the voice for the uk as they focus mostly on British films, however they found in a lot of mainstream cinemas so although kind of up our street because its British it still is would not be too likely that they would distribute our film.
Another media institution that would consider distributing our film would be a distributor like dogwoof. A UK film distributor association and known for supporting many independent films.
They shortly after set up dogwoof indie set up to advertise fresh and new talent around from the growing amount of independent filmmakers in the industry. The most relevant to our film genre would be crypt club. www.cryptclubproductions.blogspot.com .CRYPT CLUB is an independent production and distribution company specialising in thrillers, horror and dark fantasy films. Some film festivals screen as well as give advice to filmmakers. These festivals would be another great way of distributing and promoting our film it’s cheap and we can get a guaranteed audience. In the US film festivals are extremely popular due to the vast amount of independent film makers over there. He Sundance Film Festival is a film festival that takes place annually in the state of Utah, in the United States. It is the largest independent cinema festival in the U.S. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, as well as the Sundance Resort, the festival is the premier showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. Raindance is a more UK based festival which usually takes place in central London it is the UK's largest independent film festival established in 1992 by Elliot Grove to extend the normal film school activities of Raindance and to celebrate and support independent filmmaking.
There are other alternatives to distribute our film. This is simply through the internet. This method has become very popular over the year and has made many of today’s famous artists what they are today. This method is so popular because it cheaper and just so easy to carry out. Sites such as YouTube only require a membership to upload films and videos. This way is also effective as you can get comments from your actually audience as well as secondary audience and because its not exactly released you can take your film and make changes to it based on the feedback./comments
It’s cheap and can spread simply through word of mouth. Another way to market films is underground film who concentrates on independent film distribution through the internet. They intend to “create a digital film library with the widest breadth of content possible and broaden exposure by making hard-to-find works available through Internet distribution.
